Does my home value going down help or hurt me in getting rid of my PMI payments someday?

We've paid our mortgage and PMI payment ($260.00 a month) consistently for the past three years. Our home value has gone down somewhere around $80,000. Does it make any sense to have someone do an appraisal on our home and try to get rid of our PMI payment? Thanks for any help or guidance.
